PRINCE2® Practitioner (v7) Cheatsheet — Scenario Pickers, Controls & Product Map

High-yield PRINCE2 Practitioner (v7) review: how to choose the best next action, apply tolerances/exception logic, and identify the right management products in scenario questions.

Use this for last‑mile review. Pair it with the Syllabus for coverage and Practice for scenario speed.

Practitioner “best answer” logic

Practitioner questions often boil down to two checks:

  1. Is this within tolerance?
  2. Which control / management product makes the situation governable?

If an option skips governance (“just do it”) when control is implied, it’s often wrong.

Exception logic (fast table)

Situation Typical action Why
Forecast within tolerance PM handles + reports management by exception
Forecast outside tolerance escalate via exception board must decide
Stage boundary reached plan next stage + seek authorization manage by stages

Keywords to watch: “outside tolerance”, “significant deviation”, “no longer viable”, “major change” → exception escalation patterns.

“Which product next?” picker

If the scenario is about… Reach for…
justification / viability Business Case (update)
acceptance definition Project Product Description
how to manage and report quality Quality Management Approach
evidence of quality checks Quality Register
risk responses and ownership Risk Register (and approach)
a new problem/change request Issue Register (log + assess)
decision needed because of deviation Exception Report
regular board update Highlight Report
end-of-stage decision End Stage Report + Next Stage Plan

Tailoring (high-yield)

Tailoring is encouraged, but you must not break the principles. A good tailoring answer:

  • keeps roles/authority clear
  • preserves controls (stages, tolerances, reporting)
  • stays product-focused (clear acceptance criteria)

Roles — who should do what (scenario cues)

Cue Likely owner
“Authorize project / stage / exception” Project Board
“Day-to-day planning, monitoring, issue management” Project Manager
“Deliver work packages, report progress” Team Manager / Team

Process picker (when a question asks “where are we?”)

Process When you’re likely here
SU project is being defined/validated before initiation
IP building the baseline approaches + plan
CS managing work during a stage
MP team delivering against a work package
SB preparing end-stage info + next stage plan
CP closing down, handover, lessons
DP board-level direction/authorization

Practitioner quick eliminations

  • “Change without assessment” → usually wrong.
  • “Skip documenting” (when a register/report is implied) → usually wrong.
  • “PM approves an exception” → usually wrong (board decides).
  • “Ignore Business Case” → usually wrong (continued justification is a principle).
