Note: FINRA uses unscored pretest items for question development. You won’t know which items are unscored, so treat every item as scored.

What Series 6 tests (job functions)

Series 6 is organized by four major job functions:

  • F1 — Seeks Business for the Broker-Dealer from Customers and Potential Customers — 24% (12 items)
  • F2 — Opens Accounts After Obtaining and Evaluating Customers’ Financial Profile and Investment Objectives — 16% (8 items)
  • F3 — Provides Customers with Information, Makes Recommendations, Transfers Assets and Maintains Appropriate Records — 50% (25 items)
  • F4 — Obtains and Verifies Purchase/Sale Instructions; Processes, Completes and Confirms Transactions — 10% (5 items)

Eligibility (important)

Series 6 requires firm sponsorship. You must be associated with a FINRA member firm (or other applicable SRO member firm) to enroll and test.

After you pass

Series 6 is typically paired with the SIE to support registration as an Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Representative, subject to firm registration processes and role requirements.
