- 3 hours
- 70 multiple-choice and true/false questions
What Fire Protection 2024 is really testing
This exam rewards candidates who can move quickly through broad Part 3 fire-safety terrain:
- Classify the building correctly
- Identify the major occupancy and building condition
- Match the question to the right fire-safety subsystem
- Find the controlling rule fast
Practical study buckets
- Part 3 fire-protection core: classification, fire separations, fire-resistance ratings, alarms, sprinklers, exits, firefighting provisions, high buildings, service spaces, storage systems, pools, spas, stations, tents, and existing buildings.
- Part 6 HVAC and fire-safety crossover: fire dampers, smoke detectors, ducts in exits, hazardous gases, and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Part 7 fire-protection plumbing crossover: water service pipes and backflow from fire protection systems.
- Part 9 housing crossover: means of egress, fire protection, crawl spaces, ventilation alarms, heating and electrical emergency-lighting items.
- Division C administration: permits, occupancy, documentation, and alternative solutions.
Common traps
- Trying to memorize every fire-safety article without first learning the system buckets.
- Missing when a question turns on classification / occupancy / building height / sprinkler condition.
- Ignoring related Part 6, Part 7, or Part 9 items that the syllabus explicitly includes.
- Spending too much time in the code because the part map is weak.
Practical prep strategy
- Build a Part 3 system map first.
- Group questions by system:
- fire separations
- fire alarm and detection
- firefighting provisions
- exits and egress
- service spaces / HVAC crossover
- Add the Part 6, 7, 9, and Division C crossover material after the Part 3 map is stable.
- Practice switching from occupancy/classification questions to subsystem questions under time pressure.
