Building Structural 2024 Study Plan -- 4 Weeks to Exam Day

A practical 4-week study plan for the Ontario Building Structural 2024 BCIN exam, built around open-book code navigation and structural problem triage.

This plan assumes you are studying for a 3-hour open-book exam and need both rule knowledge and fast code navigation.

Week 1 – Build the map

  • Read the official syllabus once from top to bottom.
  • Build a one-page map of where structural topics live:
    • Part 4
    • structural parts of Part 9
    • relevant Part 3 provisions
    • Part 5 load and water-related sections
    • Part 11 compliance alternatives
    • Division C permit and review rules
  • Start a code-navigation log: every time you look something up, record where you found it.

Week 2 – Core structural blocks

  • Focus on Part 4 and Part 9 structural requirements.
  • Break review into daily blocks:
    • loads and structural design
    • foundations and floors-on-ground
    • wood framing and columns
    • masonry, chimneys, fireplaces, stairs and guards
  • At the end of each session, do a short untimed retrieval drill: “If I needed this again, where would I go first?”

Week 3 – Boundary zones and traps

  • Review the structural edges of:
    • Part 3 fire-protection interactions
    • Part 5 environmental separation and hydrostatic protection
    • Part 6 and Part 7 sections that show up in the syllabus
    • Part 11 renovation
    • Division C administration
  • Spend extra time on scope questions:
    • Is this Part 3 or Part 9?
    • Is this a structural question or an admin question?
    • Does a listed exception remove the section from scope?

Week 4 – Timed review

  • Run three or four timed study blocks of 60 to 75 minutes.
  • Mix topics on purpose so you practice switching code parts quickly.
  • Review misses by category:
    • wrong part
    • wrong article
    • read-too-fast error
    • exception missed

Final 3 days

  • Re-read your own one-page map and error log.
  • Revisit only high-value sections and known weak spots.
  • Do not spend the last day trying to cover every article again.
  • Confirm current Humber exam rules and your exam date.
