Kafka Design Patterns: Interview Prep and Practice

Practise Kafka architecture and integration decisions with code, record traces, diagrams and explained answers in IT Mastery.

Updates and feedback · Professional Skills & Interview Prep

Kafka Design Patterns is Tokenizer Inc.’s independent professional-skills practice bank for software engineers and architects. Use its practice questions to refresh knowledge, rehearse design decisions and identify assumptions you need to explain in an interview. Practice is available in IT Mastery, through MasteryExamPrep.com and the mobile apps.

These are original IT Mastery practice questions, not official certification questions, copied live-exam content or exam dumps. This learning track does not award a professional certification and has no official exam code, passing score or exam duration.

Start with a design decision

Use IT Mastery for interactive practice, or try the 24 free practice questions , then explain your reasoning aloud before opening each answer. Some questions ask for one answer; others explicitly ask for two. A correct selection is only part of the exercise: identify the decisive constraint and explain why a plausible alternative fails.

Practice areaWork you will do
Events and contractsDistinguish a command from a fact; choose identities and contract boundaries.
Partitioning and routingTrace key placement, ordering, channels, aggregation and feedback loops.
Delivery and recoveryDefine transaction boundaries, handle uncertain external effects, and plan replay.
Stateful processingInspect joins, tables, windows, state retention and late-data corrections.
Integration workflowsReason about outbox, CDC, sagas, process managers and request/reply.
Evolution and governanceEvaluate schemas, access boundaries, retention and migration assumptions.
Testing and operationDesign failure tests, reconcile outcomes, isolate poison records and assess backlogs.
Architecture tradeoffsCompare latency, capacity, consistency and recovery against stated requirements.

A learning track with a documented scope

The curriculum combines Kafka application design with enterprise integration patterns. Version-specific Kafka Streams examples use Apache Kafka 4.2; this is a documented reference version, not a claim that every deployment behaves identically. Questions state the constraints needed to reason about their scenario. The track is vendor-neutral and does not require Red Hat, OpenShift, a particular schema registry or a particular database.

Topic allocations are editorial learning choices. They are not an official certification blueprint. Read the technical references when a guarantee or API is unfamiliar, and use the cheat sheet to recall distinctions before another practice session.

For operator-managed deployment, OpenShift security, capacity and production recovery, use the separate Kafka Platform Architecture and Operations specialization.

Turn practice into interview rehearsal

  1. State the requirement: ordering, completeness, latency, recovery or another measurable outcome.
  2. Identify the boundary: partition, transaction, state store, external API or independently updated sink.
  3. Choose a design and name the failure it handles.
  4. Describe a test that could disprove your assumption.
  5. Change one condition and explain whether your decision still holds.

The bank supports reasoning practice; a practice percentage does not validate production competence or predict an interview outcome. Pair it with small executable experiments and examples from your own work.
