NISM Series V-D Study Plan: Distribution and Derivatives
Organise six weeks of mutual-fund, equity-derivative and interest-rate preparation with calculation review, timed practice and a useful error log.
Build around all three modules
This six-week plan is an editorial schedule, not an NISM study-hour requirement. Adjust it to your starting knowledge and examination date. The published module labels are 45% mutual-fund distribution, 35% equity derivatives and 20% interest-rate derivatives. Derivatives together account for more than half the outline, so V-A familiarity alone is not a complete V-D preparation plan.
| Week | Main work | Evidence before moving on |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Investor needs, fund structure, regulation, scheme documents and distribution | Identify the responsible party, controlling document and relevant event date. |
| 2 | Transactions, NAV/expenses, tax, returns, performance, suitability and SIF distinctions | Reconcile cash and units; distinguish product eligibility from suitability. |
| 3 | Equity indices, forwards, futures, clearing, margin and carry | State hedge direction, quote convention and total quantity before calculating. |
| 4 | Equity options and combined strategies | Separate rights, settlement cash, payoff and premium-adjusted profit. |
| 5 | Fixed income, rate quotations, duration, interest-rate futures/options and hedges | Translate yield changes into the right price direction and compatible value sensitivity. |
| 6 | Mixed practice, weak-area repair and full-length timing | Explain the deciding fact without recognizing a remembered answer; finish within a workable pacing plan. |
Use one repeatable session
- Read a small group of current NISM objectives and the matching assigned material.
- Answer fresh topic questions in Finance Prep before opening the explanations.
- For calculations, write quantity, units, sign, dates and assumptions before arithmetic.
- Record mistakes, slow answers and correct guesses. Explain why the closest alternative fails.
- Rework the method after a delay, then test it on a different question.
Keep the error log specific: “used spot instead of futures price in notional” is more useful than “weak in derivatives.” Separate missing knowledge from a dated-rule error, misread contract, unsuitable recommendation or arithmetic slip.
Practise the 180-minute pace
The official allowance is 72 seconds per question on average. Some calculations need longer; protect time for concise conceptual questions. This illustrative first-pass plan leaves 15 minutes for checks if the official interface permits returning to questions.
| Through question | First-pass elapsed target |
|---|---|
| 25 | 27 minutes 30 seconds |
| 50 | 55 minutes |
| 75 | 82 minutes 30 seconds |
| 100 | 110 minutes |
| 125 | 137 minutes 30 seconds |
| 150 | 165 minutes |
Use the 150-question public set once for a timing exercise. NISM’s wrong-answer penalty is 0.1 mark per one-mark question; do not confuse a raw percentage correct with the official net-mark calculation. Finance Prep’s practice score is not a verified reproduction of that scorer or a validated pass prediction.
Shorten the plan without skipping a module
With less time, merge the first two weeks and the two equity weeks, then retain separate interest-rate and mixed-review blocks. Use an early mixed session to identify what can be shortened safely. Do not remove a module because its first questions feel familiar.
