GARP SCR Study Plan: Reading, Cases and Final Revision

Build an eight-week SCR study schedule around all ten chapters, required readings, emissions calculations, scenario reasoning and a timed practice review.

Start with the materials for your sitting

Download the current Study Guide and Learning Objectives through GARP’s SCR study materials . Match the curriculum year to your registration, include required online readings and check the candidate portal’s errata. Our practice bank currently follows 2026 scope. A later exam appointment does not by itself confirm that the syllabus is unchanged.

GARP recommends approximately 100–150 preparation hours on its program page . Treat that as planning guidance, not a requirement or a promise. Your existing climate, finance and risk background changes the work needed.

The eight-week schedule below is an editorial example: six weeks at 14 hours plus two at 18 hours gives 120 hours, including a four-hour independent practice attempt and its separate review. Move hours toward demonstrated weaknesses without omitting smaller chapters.

An eight-week, 120-hour example

WeekHoursMain workEvidence to keep
114Chapter 1: climate foundations; begin Chapter 2 sustainability and its required readings.Explain observed warming and lagged responses without confusing weather with long-term climate.
214Complete Chapter 2; study Chapter 3 risk channels and its required reading.Trace a physical or transition driver through an exposure to a business or financial consequence.
314Chapter 4 policy, culture and governance, including its required readings.Distinguish a policy goal, a reporting standard, a jurisdictional obligation and an internal decision owner.
414Chapter 5 instruments; begin Chapter 6 measurement and management.Compare use-of-proceeds and performance-linked terms; identify data and boundary weaknesses in emissions measures.
514Complete Chapter 6 and its required readings; study Chapter 7 models and scenarios.Recalculate a portfolio metric and explain why a scenario result is conditional on assumptions.
614Chapters 8–10: net zero, nature risk, transition planning and carbon reporting.Assess a target or plan against scope, baseline, milestones, financing, accountability and dependencies.
718Cross-chapter cases, weak-topic reading and GARP practice materials.Keep an error log organized by reasoning cause, not only chapter or percentage score.
818Final revision, a timed attempt, explanation review and exam logistics.Complete the attempt within four hours; reserve additional review time and verify official exam-day requirements.

For Weeks 1–6, one workable split is seven hours of official reading, four of application practice and three of explanation review and recall. In Week 8, budget four hours for the 80-question public set , four for reviewing it, six for weak areas and four for recall and logistics. Adjust those allocations to your needs; they are not GARP-prescribed hours.

Use a repeatable case-review method

  1. Name the task. Is the case asking for a risk classification, a metric, a disclosure conclusion or an action?
  2. Extract the boundary. Record the location, time horizon, organizational scope, units and information available.
  3. Choose and justify. Identify the fact that makes one answer better than its closest alternative.
  4. Diagnose the error. Separate missing knowledge, a boundary mistake, an arithmetic error and an unsupported inference.
  5. Retest with fresh evidence. Use a new question or change the scenario assumption instead of memorizing the previous answer.

For a metric error, write the units before calculating. For a governance error, name who decides, who supplies information and who challenges the decision. For a scenario error, explain what would change under a different pathway, horizon or physical assumption.

Prepare for the real case format

The official SCR exam includes a multipart case study. Our independent cases help practise integrated decisions but do not simulate shared-stimulus mechanics. Use GARP’s official practice exams to practise retaining shared facts and revisiting exhibits without importing an assumption from one subquestion into another.

During a four-hour independent attempt, the average is three minutes per item. Mark an uncertain answer, continue, and revisit it if time permits. Do not interpret a public-practice result as an official passing prediction. Review correct guesses as carefully as mistakes.

Final checks

Use the Exam Blueprint to confirm all ten chapters and required readings are covered. Review the Cheat Sheet for recurring distinctions, then verify appointment, identification, calculator and conduct rules through Official Resources . Leave time to resolve account or appointment issues with the appropriate provider rather than treating exam day as a study session.
