GARP SCR Exam Blueprint: Climate Risk Topics and Format
Map the ten 2026 SCR chapters, official question ranges and multipart-case format to practical study tasks and Finance Prep's independent practice coverage.
Know the assessment and its limits
GARP’s Sustainability and Climate Risk Certificate assessment has 80 equally weighted multiple-choice questions, including one multipart question case study, with four hours allowed. Use the official program and exam page and the materials for your registered sitting as the authority. Sources checked October 14, 2026; our current practice scope is 2026, not an assumed 2027 edition.
Finance Prep offers independent four-choice cases with one best answer. They exercise integrated reasoning but do not reproduce a shared multipart stimulus. Our 80-question public set is a pacing and reasoning exercise, not a claim of equivalent official difficulty or a validated pass prediction.
Map the ten chapters to candidate work
The 2026 SCR Candidate Guide gives question ranges, not a fixed percentage for every chapter. The range endpoints are independent; do not add every maximum or minimum as if it described one 80-question paper.
| Chapter | Official question range | What to practise |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundations of Climate Change | 8–12 | Explain the carbon cycle, warming mechanisms, physical observations and timescale differences. |
| 2. Sustainability | 8–12 | Compare development goals, materiality perspectives and economic or social trade-offs. |
| 3. Climate Change Risk | 8–12 | Trace physical and transition drivers into credit, market, operational and other financial effects. |
| 4. Sustainability and Climate Policy, Culture, and Governance | 8–12 | Distinguish policy instruments, supervisory roles, organizational responsibilities and reporting boundaries. |
| 5. Green and Sustainable Finance Markets and Instruments | 8–12 | Evaluate use-of-proceeds claims, performance-linked terms, incentives and integrity of labels. |
| 6. Climate Risk Measurement and Management | 8–12 | Interpret emissions and portfolio metrics, data quality, risk assessment and management responses. |
| 7. Climate Models and Scenario Analysis | 8–12 | Compare pathways, model assumptions, horizons, uncertainty and decision usefulness. |
| 8. Net Zero | 3–6 | Evaluate target scope, reductions, residual emissions and the role of removals. |
| 9. Climate and Nature Risk Assessment | 3–6 | Connect location-specific dependencies, ecosystem impacts and risk pathways. |
| 10. Transition Planning and Carbon Reporting | 3–6 | Assess baselines, milestones, implementation, governance and reporting consistency. |
The official Study Guide and Learning Objectives also identifies required online readings. Include those rather than relying on chapter names alone. Optional Climate PAL learning is not an additional examined chapter; distinguish a useful learning tool from assessed scope.
Understand the practice allocation
The 480-question app bank has 54 questions in each of Chapters 1–7, 30 in Chapter 8, and 36 in each of Chapters 9–10. The public set uses 9/9/9/9/9/9/9/5/6/6, covering all ten chapters and 61 study sections. These are editorial allocations within the guide’s ranges, not official fixed GARP weights.
Read a whole case before choosing. A financial-loss estimate needs a defined hazard, exposure and vulnerability. An emissions comparison needs a consistent boundary and denominator. A scenario can reveal sensitivity without assigning a probability. The official multipart case additionally requires keeping shared facts consistent across its questions; practise that skill with GARP’s own practice materials.
Make an evidence-based revision checklist
- Can you explain a risk transmission channel rather than merely name a hazard?
- Can you identify the boundary, denominator and units behind an emissions number?
- Can you distinguish a conditional scenario result from a prediction?
- Can you evaluate a sustainability claim using contractual terms or implementation evidence?
- Can you identify what missing data prevents you from concluding?
- Have you covered every current learning objective and required reading, including the smaller final chapters?
Use the Study Plan for sequencing, the Cheat Sheet for compact checks and Official Resources for controlling guides, policies and errata. A strong practice score does not supply an official passing threshold.
