GARP FRR Study Plan: Reading, Calculation and Risk Judgment

Use an adaptable eight-week FRR routine to cover credit, market, operational and asset/liability risk with reading, calculations and reviewed practice.

Set a realistic schedule

GARP’s currently linked Course Guide estimates 80–140 study hours. Its course page recommends at least two months of review for candidates with little banking-risk experience. Treat those as guidance, not a personalized guarantee. The eight-week routine below is editorial: it spreads 80–140 hours across roughly 10–17.5 hours a week. Adjust it for your starting knowledge, work schedule and registration deadline.

WeekMain workEvidence of progress
1Read the guide and begin credit riskExplain exposure, PD, LGD and expected versus unexpected loss.
2Finish credit analysis and portfolio applicationsWork a loss calculation; explain collateral, concentration and risk-transfer limits.
3Market instruments and valuationTrack cash flows, FX direction, maturity and rate conventions.
4Market measurement and controlsExplain duration/PV01, VaR/ES, back-testing and key assumptions.
5Operational riskMap event, control, owner, oversight and evidence; identify the stated capital framework.
6Asset/liability managementBuild a gap or liquidity ladder and distinguish earnings, value and funding effects.
7Mixed practice and targeted rereadingResolve recurring errors across all four equally weighted modules.
8Timed practice and final reviewExplain difficult decisions without recognizing a memorized answer position.

Use a repeatable session

  1. Read one assigned chapter or objective group and summarize the decision it supports.
  2. Work a short topic set in Finance Prep. Write down the decisive fact before opening the explanation.
  3. For calculations, record units, horizon, sign and assumptions before arithmetic.
  4. For each error or correct guess, explain why the closest alternative fails.
  5. Revisit the official reading, then test with fresh questions after a delay.

Avoid converting every scenario into “add controls” or “escalate.” A good response must match the particular evidence, mandate and exposure. Likewise, a correctly calculated measure may still be misinterpreted.

Practise pacing without inventing exam rules

The official assessment is 80 questions in 175 minutes, an average of about 2 minutes 11 seconds per item. Our 80-question public set can support that pacing exercise, but it is a fixed independent practice set, not the official interface. Confirm the current calculator, review and navigation instructions with the provider. Do not assume our website tools reproduce them.

On a first timed attempt, note where time goes: translating the case, recalling the method, calculating, or comparing alternatives. Afterwards, separate conceptual mistakes from arithmetic, units and reading errors. Do not keep repeating the same public set to manufacture a higher score.

Final checks

Use the Cheat Sheet to test compact distinctions, not replace the readings. Balance preparation across all four modules rather than letting the largest chapter count dominate. GARP’s official 54/80 threshold applies to its assessment; a public practice score or app percentage does not guarantee a pass. Use Official Resources to confirm your assigned materials and logistics.
