Databricks Context Engineer Associate Exam Blueprint

Map the seven official context-engineering domains to practical retrieval, memory, tools, compaction and agent-workflow decisions.

The official exam guide identifies seven weighted domains for the examination available from July 29, 2026. Use the weights to plan breadth; individual study time should also reflect your gaps.

Official domainWeightEvidence to practise interpreting
Foundations of Context Engineering16%Context sources, instruction/data boundaries, governance and failure localization.
System Prompt and Instruction Design9%Instruction hierarchy, tool contracts, structured outputs and controlled prompt tests.
Knowledge Retrieval and Genie Configuration20%AI Search retrieval and filters, metadata, permissions, Genie instructions and query results.
Memory Architecture with Lakebase and MLflow18%Session history, durable memory, state stores, retrieval scope and lifecycle decisions.
Tool Design, MCP, and Agent Context13%Tool discovery, schemas, caller identity, execution privileges and MCP integration.
Context Compression and Compaction11%Token budgets, trimming policies, summary fidelity and preserved constraints.
Multi-Agent and Long-Horizon Task Design13%Handoffs, shared state, dependency graphs, checkpoints and evaluation evidence.

Format and practice boundaries

The guide describes approximately 45 scored questions in 90 minutes, with multiple-choice and multiple-selection items. Additional unscored items may be present. Databricks’ certification page currently lists 45 scored questions. Follow the provider’s actual appointment instructions.

The IT Mastery bank includes single-answer and Select TWO practice. It does not claim an official 50/50 item mix, a disclosed passing threshold, or identical difficulty to the certification exam. Python and SQL exhibits should be read against their supplied contracts; an application-defined interface is not automatically a public Databricks SDK method.

The free practice exam rounds these weights to 7/4/9/8/6/5/6 questions. That rounding is a practice allocation, not a guarantee of how many questions appear in each official domain.

Check coverage through tasks

Before another mixed attempt, explain a scenario without relying on its answer choices:

  • Identify the earliest stage where required evidence or authority is lost.
  • Distinguish a candidate excluded by filtering from one ranked poorly after retrieval.
  • Track caller identity and permissions through a tool invocation.
  • Separate conversation continuity, durable user facts and resumable workflow state.
  • Show what a compacted summary must preserve and how you would test it.
  • Reconstruct the next valid action from task dependencies and completion evidence.

Use the official resources for the current outline and registration requirements, then practise weaker tasks in the app.
