CFE Day 1 Vignette Practice: Strategic Case Decisions
Practise CPA Canada Common Final Examination Day 1 reasoning with original baseline-and-update cases, four-question drills and detailed explanations in Finance Prep.
Updates & Feedback — See practice changes or report a case, calculation or explanation.
Use Finance Prep to turn a business update into a supported recommendation. Read the fictional prior strategy, identify what has changed, compare the feasible alternatives and test whether the proposed commitment fits the entity’s cash, capacity and objectives.
These are original Finance Prep case questions, independent of CPA Canada and provincial or regional CPA bodies. They are not official exam questions, copied live-exam content or exam dumps. The companion develops case reasoning; the official Day 1 assessment requires a written response linked to Capstone 1.
Try the case format
Each case supplies its own prior baseline and current update, followed by four single-select questions. Review the complete explanation for every choice, including a correct guess. The free practice set contains four cases and 16 explained questions across the four practice areas. It is a fixed editorial exercise, with an optional 60-minute working period.
Official assessment and companion practice
| Feature | Official CFE Day 1 | Finance Prep companion |
|---|---|---|
| Response | A four-hour written case linked to Capstone 1 | Compact original cases with four selected answers each |
| Evidence | Your assigned case, current update and candidate instructions | A self-contained fictional baseline, exhibits and question-specific conditions |
| Main work | Integrated strategic and enabling judgment, supported by common technical knowledge | Assess constraints, calculations, alternatives and implementation consequences |
| Feedback | Official written-assessment process | Explained alternatives and practice performance; no writing assessment or pass prediction |
Practise writing and debriefing full responses with your authorized CPA materials as well. These drills do not reproduce an official Capstone case, elective-role assessment or marking rubric. Confirm your registered PEP/CFE pathway and current instructions with your regional CPA body.
Choose the next drill from the decision you missed
| If your recommendation failed because… | Practise… | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| You repeated the old strategy despite a material update | Baseline and situational analysis | Which objective or commitment remains, and which supporting assumption changed? |
| An attractive option could not be delivered | Strategic and operating issues | Peak funding, dated capacity, protected service and enforceable permissions |
| Separate calculations pointed in different directions | Integrated analysis | A consistent entity-wide comparison, opportunity costs and mutually exclusive benefits |
| The paper named a risk but authorized the same commitment | Professional judgment and board advice | A condition, alternative or commitment the board can actually execute |
Debrief the reasoning, then try a fresh case
For a missed answer, record the decisive fact and its consequence. Distinguish a calculation error from an omitted payment, an incompatible resource or an unsupported inference. State what changed fact would make a weaker alternative preferable. Repeating a familiar set can test recall of its explanations; a fresh case tests whether you can apply the reasoning independently.
