CFA Level III Portfolio Management Exam Blueprint: 2027
Compare official Level III topic ranges and mixed exam format with the coverage and limits of the Portfolio Management item-set and Essay practice banks.
The CFA Institute Level III exam guide gives the format and topic ranges below. The 2027 Portfolio Management outline controls the learning outcomes for this practice. Check current curriculum corrections before studying an affected reading.
Official exam and this practice
| Feature | Official Level III exam | Finance Prep practice offerings |
|---|---|---|
| Formats | 11 item sets and 11 constructed-response sets | Separate multiple-choice item sets and written-response Essay banks |
| Sessions | Two 132-minute sessions, each containing both formats | Optional editorial 11-case item-set block in 132 minutes; Essay practice is untimed |
| MCQ structure | Four questions per item set; three choices each | Four independent questions per case; three choices each |
| Trial content | Includes one unscored set of each format | Educational questions with visible explanations; no replicated trial-item process |
| Result | CFA Institute assessment and scoring | Explained item-set answers and optional editorial Essay self-scoring; no official passing prediction |
The 132-minute app block models a useful item-set workload. It is not an official all-MCQ session and does not cover the constructed-response half of the exam.
Written-response practice
The separate Essay bank contains 277 cases and 840 written parts, using the same six common-core/pathway topic homes. Draft a response before viewing the suggested answer. Self-scoring criteria and the case’s 12 practice points are editorial learning aids; individual part allocations are not official CFA marking weights. The existing topic table reports item-set inventory, not counts of written parts.
Topic coverage
| Area | Official range | Available cases | Available questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asset Allocation | 15–20% | 48 | 192 |
| Portfolio Construction | 15–20% | 48 | 192 |
| Performance Measurement | 5–10% | 21 | 84 |
| Derivatives and Risk Management | 10–15% | 35 | 140 |
| Ethical and Professional Standards | 10–15% | 35 | 140 |
| Portfolio Management pathway | 30–35% | 90 | 360 |
| Total practice inventory | 277 | 1,108 |
Practice allocation uses an editorial mix within these ranges. Inventory counts do not prescribe the distribution of every short quiz, and public selection is a separate fixed sample.
What the pathway adds
Equity cases connect indexing, factor exposure, active risk, capacity and implementation costs. Fixed-income cases cover liability-relative exposure, curve positioning, credit risk and representative index construction. Execution cases distinguish the owner’s decision benchmark from a trader’s execution comparison. Institutional cases combine spending, liquidity, derivatives and governance without assuming that a long horizon removes near-term obligations.
Practise written explanations in the Essay bank alongside your official candidate materials. Selecting a correct multiple-choice answer does not demonstrate that you can construct an exam-quality written response.
